Custom Metrics in EveryStep Scripts

Besides essential web app performance metrics (e.g., average response time), Dotcom-Monitor allows users to track, aggregate and analyze custom metric data. The following custom metrics can be collected by the system during EveryStep script execution:

Load time of specified network elements within the script, measured by Network Watcher.
Execution time of the selected parts in the scripts, measured by Script Time Watcher.

When collected as custom web performance metrics, Network and Script Time Watcher checks are reported as separate metrics. Subsequently, the results of these metrics are extracted from individual test session reports and aggregated on performance charts.

When to Collect Network Watcher Statistics
The Network Watcher metric can be used to measure the load time of various network elements during the execution of monitoring scripts. For example, consider adding the Network Watcher metric to your script in the following cases:
- To identify any slow-loading images that may affect page performance.
- To monitor JavaScript files used in your web application.
- To track the load time of CSS Files to ensure efficient styling and layout rendering of your web pages.
- To assess font load time to ensure that custom fonts are loading efficiently and not causing delays in page rendering.
- To check AJAX requests to identify any slow or failed requests that may affect dynamic content loading.
- To track API calls made by your web application to external services, helping to ensure timely data retrieval and processing.
When to Collect Script Time Watcher Statistics
Using Time Watcher helps to receive insights into the experience your users receive while interacting with your web application. Here are some examples of when to collect statistics on the Time Watcher metric:
- To calculate the time, it takes for a form submission to complete.
- To measure the report generation and report chart load time.
- To check the time elapsed from when your users submit their credentials (such as username and password) to when they are successfully authenticated and logged into the system.
- To measure the time, it takes for your web app’s search functionality to return results to users.
- To verify the load time of dynamic content, such as product suggestions displayed on your website.

When the Custom Metric option is enabled, the custom metric check is counted as an additional step in the monitoring script and impacts overall UserView task consumption.
